CRAFTSMANSHIP FROM MODRA

Ceramics of Modra is an iconic symbol of Slovak craftsmanship with deep roots in history. It was created in the town of Modra, where it began to be produced in the 16th century. This pottery is known for its hand-painted patterns, especially blue floral and plant ornaments on a white background, which represent the richness of Slovak folk culture. The original creation of ceramics was closely related to winemaking. Potters produced objects of daily use, primarily tableware such as pots, pans, water jugs, wine jugs, bowls, mugs, baking trays, various containers, shrines, small toys, but also tiled stoves.

Blue-white ceramics is the classic and most famous style, where delicate blue patterns are used on a white background. This style emphasizes traditional motifs, especially floral and plant ornaments, and looks elegant and simple. Its aesthetics are characteristic of Slovak folk culture and are often associated with traditional values and the historical heritage of Modra, and it is well known to the general public.

Ceramics of Modra distinguishes several other types of use of colors.

Haban decor – yellow, green, purple, blue and brown outline. When the Habans settled in our territory (16th and 17th centuries), they met here with a fairly large community of local potters, with whom they shared knowledge of the pottery craft and taught local potters the technology of painting rich floral ornaments on white glaze. At the end of the 17th century, part of the Haban people merged with the local population, and potters established their own workshops. Many later found employment in the largest ceramic center in Modra. This is how Haban ceramics became a part of the range of Modra’s jug makers. Thanks to the Habans, majolica looks as we know it today. Out of respect for them, this decor still bears their name. It is said that the Habans did not use red color in painting for religious reasons, it was a symbol of death, violence, blood… However, the reality will probably be less romantic in reality and the real reason was the difficult availability of red color.

Green decor – Historically, green was often used and is one of the traditional colors of ornamentation. The green color is transparent and spreads a little, so it is necessary to cover it with a dark brown contour. This decor is painted in such a way that it is first drawn with a contour like a coloring book, and then colored with paint.

Colorful decor – red, yellow, blue, green, purple color and brown outline. Many consider it to be the most typical for Modran majolica, but the interesting thing is that the red color was historically very rare because it was made of gold. A very typical element of colorful decor is the red rose, which is a typical dominant feature of this decor. We at TATRATEA decided to pay attention to this multicolored ceramic. The color palette allows artists greater creativity and variety in patterns, while often capturing various aspects of everyday life, nature or Slovak folklore. Multi-colored pieces have a more cheerful and lively look that appeals to a wider audience and adds dynamism to ceramics.

The bottle design was once again created by Brian Males, who stands behind several successful brand projects.
